  • Public transport doesn’t leave much to be desired. You will mainly depend on buses.
  • The only exception is the newly developed planned community of Victoria Island. Here, trams are available alongside well maintained promenade trails.
  • The suburban rail network is of limited use to visitors.
  • There is only one major bus rapid transit corridor, with a major metro system being planned to cover up to 7 lines.

  • None of the major UK registered car rental brokers offer any sort of car hire deals in Lagos. This is hardly surprising.
  • The chaotic and congested roads in and around Lagos do not make for the sort of conditions where a rental car is either enjoyable or advisable.
  • Updated March 2017 – some offers were found with Sixt, but not for less than £600 for one week!
  • A more recent option has been the huge expansion of Uber.
  • Buses are still ubiquitous and cheap.

Should you rent a car in Lagos?

Since rail travel in Nigeria is relatively limited, to visit some of the scenic national parks which are available within a day of driving from Lagos, some sort of motorised transport is certainly going to be needed. We would recommend hiring a car with driver, or taking an organised bus or private tour.

Whatever form of transport you take in Lagos, the risk of an accident or of transport related crime remains high.
