General comment -

The Argentinian capital is a vast sprawling metropolis which also has an extensive underground system, together with a wide network of buses. There is simply no great advantage in having a hire car to visit the city of Buenos Aires itself, and if you plan to visit the popular tourist resorts around Punto del Este in neighbouring Uruguay, then this is much easier to do by ferry.

Another popular excursion from Buenos Aires is to visit Iguazu Falls, which is at the triangular border between Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. However our recommendation here would be to take a coach (allow up to 24 hours), an organised bus tour, or alternatively, to fly.
The sheer richness of cultural attractions in Buenos Aires could no doubt keep the visitor busy for weeks, because this is one of South America’s greatest cities, although a few too many late nights might need to be counterbalanced with some rural escapades!

However, the most spectacular scenery that Argentina has to offer really is nowhere near Buenos Aires, and anyone planning a road trip around Argentina will soon start to realise that the country is deceptively large. Naturally, because it’s the main international gateway, Buenos Aires might be an obvious choice for starting such a road trip, but if you are short of time, then the chances are that you will want to fly somewhere further west or south first.
Therefore, our advice is that one is there is really isn’t the sort of destination where a rental car would be useful.

Why? Visiting Buenos Aires using a hire car

Why do you need a car in Buenos Aires ?

• A car would be useful if you want to start a long Argentinian road trip in Buenos Aires.

Why not? Visiting Buenos Aires without a car

Why don't you need a car in Buenos Aires ?

  • A car is of little use in the city of Buenos Aires itself.
    • The city is congested, and one of the largest in South America. It will be easier to get around by bus.
    • Commuter rail and metro services are also widespread.
    • For many other places in Argentina, it would be better to take an internal flight first, and look at car hire options at the destination.
