Should I rent a car in Antalya? The decision on whether or not to hire a car in Antalya will be largely based on where you are staying, and then to a lesser extent on what places you are planning to visit during your holiday. For starters, Antalya is one of Turkey’s largest cities, with a population of over 1 million people, and the city has a perfectly reasonable urban rail network. Antalya is also one of the region’s most historic cities, and it’s a great place to stay in its own right. Any holiday based around staying within the city is unlikely to need to have a hire car included with it.

Visitors arriving into Antalya have a reasonable choice of onward public transport options, once they reach the city centre. If you are travelling around Turkey by train and arriving in Antalya, then car hire options are also widely available in the city centre, although they do not tend to be particularly good value when compared with Antalya airport car hire.

Why? Visiting Antalya using a hire car

Why do you need a car in Antalya ?

Antalya is a destination with a large number of purpose-built holiday resort properties, including many resort villas as well as large chain hotels. Whilst the hotels tend to be more self-contained with numerous different amenities on site, rental villas tend to be more geared up towards self catering and driving around to get to places.

If your holiday is geared more around beach and waterfront activities, then a hire car in Antalya is unlikely to be much use, but you might still want to consider a one or two day rental from within your resort.

There’s a good choice of national and regional parks to visit when going inland. The more adventurous will certainly want to visit the amazing cave dwellings of Cappadocia, focused around the town of Goreme. Of course, it’s perfectly possible to visit Cappadocia without a hire car, and the most iconic way to see this region is to take a hot air balloon trip. Whether by tour bus or by rental car, Cappadocia is going to be around 5 to 6 hours drive from most resorts around the Antalya region. To get the best out of Cappadocia, we would certainly recommend staying overnight, making sure you have your camera ready both for sunset and for the sunrise the next morning.

Why not? Visiting Antalya without a car

Why don't you need a car in Antalya ?

  • Public transport in the city of Antalya is of a good standard.
  • To visit Cappadocia, this can be done using an organised tour.
  • If you are planning just on staying in resort and visiting nearby beaches, taxis and local buses are sufficient.

The answer to this varies hugely from one destination to the next, based on a wide range of factors. It's based on renting a car at the airport (TBC), and driving for an average of 2-3 hours on open roads on most days.

Notes:

In summary, Antalya is certainly the sort of destination where you will have no problem at all enjoying a holiday without needing to get a hire car, but our advice is that on balance, it’s probably still a good idea. If you are staying in the city centre where parking is a problem, then just hiring a car for a couple of days for an excursion up towards Cappadocia might be a safer bet, but otherwise, if your resort includes parking, then a full week’s hire is unlikely to cost much more than a shorter period, unless you are adding on a load of extras which are charged on a daily rate.

Should you rent a car in Bodrum? Visitors arriving into Bodrum airport and considering whether or not to hire a car will probably already be aware that most of the resorts around Bodrum are scattered quite far apart, as are the main places of interest to visit.

Whereas holidaying in larger Turkish Mediterranean cities like Izmir or Antalya is easy enough to do without a car, a hire car is much more useful in and around Bodrum, especially if you want to do excursions further inland

Why? Visiting Bodrum using a hire car

Why do you need a car in Bodrum ?

Should you rent a car in Bodrum? Should you rent a car in Bodrum?

  • Not only are there many natural sites around Bodrum which are well worth visiting, but the world-famous rock formations at Pamukkale are also a must see.
  • Trying to get to Pamukkale by scheduled bus service is going to be a lot of hassle, although many resorts will offer organised tours, because Bodrum is the closest major international airport to Pamukkale. Allow around 3 hours to drive to Pamukkale from any of the major resorts around Bodrum.
  • For enjoying the coastline, a hire car is also going to give you a great deal more flexibility when compared to taking organised tours or trying to get around by scheduled bus.

Should you rent a car in Bodrum? For all of these reasons, our hire car advice in Bodrum is that getting one is generally a good idea.

Why not? Visiting Bodrum without a car

Why don't you need a car in Bodrum ?

  • We would not generally advise visiting Bodrum without a hire car, if you are able to avoid it.
  • Although there is still public transport, especially around the larger resorts, your options will be limited without a hire car.
  • Turkey has a poor reputation for road safety when compared with northern Europe, although the record is relatively good by global standards.
