Public transport here is adequate, with a fast rail link running directly and from the airport. There’s a reasonable network of local commuter services. The city has also invested in a single long tram line. However, it’s a slow way to cover any distance due to the sheer number of stops.

The most popular means of getting around is still by bus. The network is far more comprehensive, and it’s also amazingly cheap. However, so are taxis, and they are also very widely available.

Why do you need a car in Casablanca ?

Why should I hire a car in Casablanca?

  • Within and around the city, we don’t really advise hiring a car.

  • Getting a rental car in Casablanca might be useful if you are staying in a resort area outside the city.
  • A hire car would be useful if you are planning on touring away from the trunk public transport routes.
  • Compared to other cities in Morocco, Casablanca has the widest network of flights, including long haul transatlantic services.
  • This makes it a more obvious place to pick up a rental car if you are arriving from further afield.

Why don't you need a car in Casablanca ?

Reasons to visit Casablanca without a car

  • You can start your visit to Casablanca by taking the train. There’sa direct rail shuttle operating from the terminal at Mohammad V airport.
  • You also find that Casablanca is a surprisingly easy city to walk around. In particular in the more historic medina, with high walls and narrow streets, you really aren’t going to be exposed to the heat of the sun. Even in the more openly planned French style new town, wide boulevards are kept cool with ample tree coverage.
  • Casablanca is significantly more relaxed than Marrakech in terms of actually being able to walk places without being hassled by touts.
  • Many of Morocco’s most interesting inland scenic spots are further to the south.
  • If you are thinking of heading into the Atlas mountains, then it makes more sense to look at renting a car in Marrakech, or looking at organised tours from either there, or from the mountain gateway of Ouarzazate.
  • You can certainly use Casablanca as a starting point to explore the rest of Morocco. Although there is perhaps a better range of European flights into Marrakesh, Casablanca is still the main hub for long haul arrivals. There is no particular reason to continue your onward travels in a rental car, since you can reach most of the other major Moroccan cities by train or coach.
  • Even first-class rail travel is amazingly cheap compared to neighbouring European standards.
  • If you do want to rent a car in Casablanca, then beware of that Morocco has a reputation for various car rental scams, including regular police “checks” where you will be expected to pay a fee of some kind.
  • Driving in Morocco is considerably more dangerous than driving in Europe or the USA. However, the roads are still relatively safe compared to other countries in Africa.

Notes:

Casablanca is a city where our car rental advice leans towards quite a strong no, even relative to other destinations in Morocco.

This is as much due to the sheer weighting we give to staying in the city itself. You can have a fascinating trip just staying within the city, and using local beaches.

When should you hire a car in Casablanca? Since there’s much less of interest immediately outside the city, there isn’t such a need to consider renting a car here.

If you do think you need to rent a car in Casablanca, then you can still get around the country relatively quickly using the motorway network. Please check for the latest advice on safety and security.

If you are just visiting the city itself on reasonably short break, then you’ll get around fine just using buses and taxis – there’s no metro or tram of any kind here, but the airport is nice and close to the city centre, and if you are walking around the old Medina, you’ll find that there’s plenty of shade from the buildings themselves, and also a lot of the market areas are covered – although the main square of Djemaa El Fna itself is much more open.

Why do you need a car in Marrakesh ?

Reasons why you should hire a car in Marrakesh

  • We would definitely recommend getting out of the city and getting into the Atlas mountains, so a motor of some sort is going to be useful.
  • Driving in Morocco comes with various caveats and cautions, but even this is still relative. Driving standards here are considerably better than they are in most other African countries.

You might still prefer to go on a guided excursion rather than self drive, but having been to Marrakesh and then headed north by train, I regret not taking the chance to spend time in the mountains. Chances are that you will find that this is a much more authentic Moroccan experience than just staying in Marrakesh itself. Despite whatever efforts local city authorities have made to improve matters, Marrakesh is still a city that is full of tourist touts. This situation that hasn’t been helped by the huge increase in the numbers of “prey” arriving, courtesy of the various different low-cost airlines which now fly here.

Why not? Visiting Marrakesh without a car

Why don't you need a car in Marrakesh ?

Visiting Marrakesh without a car

  • There is absolutely no need for a hire car in Marrakesh if you are just sticking to the city itself, and nearby places of interest.
  • Marrakesh is a very walkable city. Alleyways are narrow and well shaded. However, you may also find this bewildering, especially as the city still has a reputation for (largely harmless but annoying) tourist touts.
  • Buses and taxis in Marrakesh are both cheap and plentiful.
  • If you want to see more of Morocco but still prefer to get around using coaches or trains, then you can head north through the barren landscape towards Casablanca and beyond.
  • Various options are also available for excursions from Marrakesh which are completely inclusive of all transport requirements. Check locally to ensure you use a reputable company.

Verdict

Self drive Marrakesh car hire is worth it if you are confident with local driving conditions.

Even if you don’t plan to hire your own self-drive car, it’s well worth heading out of the city in a car of some kind. You will certainly want to be travelling in a small group, and not on a large tourist bus.

Should you rent a car in Marrakesh? In this respect, we’d still recommend getting a car in Marrakesh, even if you go for a private tour option or just rent a car and driver as a package.

In recent years, the Moroccan government has started relocating most port services to the new Tangier Med Port near Ksar es Seghir, thus removing a lot of the road traffic that heads through Tangier, and giving a significant boost to the regional economy.

If you are arriving into either port by ferry from Spain or elsewhere, or if you are flying into Tangier International airport, then we still don’t think there’s a great deal of point in hiring a car here. The city of Tangier has a perfectly reasonable network of buses plying all of the main roads, and taxis are both plentiful and extremely cheap.
