Ratings: How does Cairo compare?

Is it worth hiring a car in Cairo? TBC

This is based on a rough consideration of the costs of renting a car in Cairo, and how this compares with the costs of using public transport. The answer to this varies hugely from one destination to the next, based on a wide range of factors. It's based on renting a car at the airport (TBC), and driving for an average of 2-3 hours on open roads on most days.

How does this compare if:

You are travelling:

Solo / As couple / small family / larger family / senior couple etc

Does car rental make sense on different budgets?

Do you need to hire a car in Cairo? TBC

This is based strictly on whether or no we think it's possible to visit Cairo (and the surrounding area) without using a car. Of the three key questions, this one is the most likely to be a "no".

Should you rent a car in Cairo? TBC

This is a balance of all factors. Remember this is an answer to the question for people who are already asking it. That's why the answer might still be a "yes", even when public transport is good.

Summary

Do you or don't you need a car in Cairo ?

The Egyptian capital has a huge wealth of historical points of interest within the city centre, in addition to the UNESCO World Heritage site at the Pyramids of Giza.

Very few people come here with the expectation of getting a rental car, and unsurprisingly, there are very few reasons to want to do so.

Why?

The main reason for renting a car in Cairo would simply be that you would usually drive or get a rental car anywhere else you go, and that you simply aren’t bothered by concerns about the traffic or trying to find a parking space and so on. If this is your usual preference, then it’s just about going to make sense, because after all, Cairo has a very crowded public transport network which some people would find intimidating, whilst walking in the midday heat in hot and dusty streets can also be extremely unpleasant.

If you are intending on staying in a more modern suburb such as Heliopolis, which is also very close to the airport, then you will find that a lot of the development here has been built around the car, and driving is as reasonable experience as urban driving in any hectic megacity is ever going to be.

The other suggestion is that hiring a car in Cairo could be useful for driving around other places within the Nile Delta, or possibly driving further to the east towards the Sinai Peninsula, or also driving south along the Nile Valley. In all of these cases, it’s perfectly possible to get around using buses, which are going to be considerably cheaper and safer than driving in your own car. Again, if it’s total flexibility that you want then you’ll still find that a rental car can provide this.

Egypt is one of the few countries in Africa where you will be able to rent a self drive car from the major rental providers such as Europcar, Avis and Hertz. Petrol is also cheap, most of the time you are unlikely to need to pay for parking, and the cost of rental is generally reasonable compared to other African nations.

Why not?

The reasons for not wanting to rent a car in Cairo should all be fairly self explanatory – there is absolutely no need at all to rent a car to visit any of the major historic points of interest, because they are all very well visited locations and they are all very well serviced by public transport.

Furthermore, Cairo has an extremely good metro service with 3 major lines, although this is the most intensively used underground system anywhere in the world (measured by the number of people carried per mile of track), so you can expect to find that this is nearly always going to be crowded, and local buses equally so. But this is really just a reason to take the usual travel precautions to avoid being a target for pickpockets and similar – on the whole, public transport in Cairo is actually extremely safe and it’s always far safer than driving.

You can easily travel beyond Cairo by train, for example to visit the port city of Alexandria, or to travel on the nightly sleeper service that runs down the Nile Valley towards Luxor and Aswan, and there are various bus excursions running into the Sinai peninsular and onwards to the coastal resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

On the whole, our general advice is strongly against hiring a car in Cairo, and even if you are actually considering it, then our advice would still be not to bother, although everything is relative, and it’s considerably easier to hire a car in Cairo than it is in almost every other major city in continental Africa, outside perhaps Morocco and South Africa.
